Siobhán Cassidy, LCSW

Mental health adovcate. Therapist. Human Being.

A Fellow Human

Siobhán Cassidy (first name pronounced sha-v-on) is a licensed clinical social worker, but first she’s a fellow human. She has a deep understanding of patients’ challenges. Like folks with attention-deficit (ADD/ADHD) and other neurodivergence. Those experiencing grief and loss. People trying to understand existential anxiety and meaning in the world. And folks on their sensuality and sexuality journey, or from the LGBTQA+ tribe.

Throughout her life Siobhán has experienced the challenges of being a first-generation child of immigrant parents. Having undiagnosed attention deficit challenges throughout school. Being the daughter of a law enforcement officer who was a 9/11 first responder. Getting to know her adult woman body and its hormonal and autoimmune reactions. And battling anxiety, periodic depression, and burnout while in a career in healthcare.

A Passionate Learner

Siobhán attended the number one state university in New York that is Stony Brook University. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalistic communications with a minor in psychology where her graduating thesis project focused on the heroin and opiate epidemic and healthcare access. In 2014 she returned to Stony Brook University School of Medicine for graduate school at the School of Social Welfare where she earned a master’s degree with honors in clinical social work with a focus on healthcare systems. Her graduate thesis was on practical interventions for emotional states of terminal cancer patients and provider countertransference reactions.

Siobhán’s academic career laid a strong educational, research, and clinical foundation in the field of expertise. Post-graduate she enhanced her expertise by participating in specialized programs, including oncology social work with Northwell Health and prolonged grief through Columbia University.

To facilitate trauma-and body-informed practices, Siobhán trained in somatic embodiment and trauma under Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and Linda Thai. She also studied under certified mind-body practitioner, Dr. James Gordon, of The Center of Mind Body Medicine.

Siobhán’s time with the program for narrative medicine at Columbia University has influenced her work to combine clinical approaches, creative arts, and storytelling. As she works with patients, she also pulls from her personal-but-parallel experience as a practitioner and certified teacher of yoga and meditation.

Siobhán’s academic research interests include:

  • Adolescent millennial and Generation Z usage of technology and its effects on relationships;

  • Professional burnout and moral injury in the educational and healthcare systems;

  • and death, dying, and those left behind living.

Whether the free chat session inspires a new patient-clinician relationship or not, Siobhán applauds anyone who is committed to improving their lives. It takes a ton of courage to show up for these types of conversations.

An Encouraging Person:

We all know life changes are inevitable. After several years in practice, Siobhán knows the relationship between therapist and patient is vital. This relationship reveals the evidence-based therapeutic approaches that apply best to your situation.

As you develop trust in the process of talk therapy you will learn and play with the sides of yourself that are innately curious, strong, and courageous. The confidence, authenticity, and bravery will help you through the ever-changing landscape of life.
